Nothing Can Separate

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39 (NIV)

Paul, in writing to the Romans, tells us that he is convinced that nothing will be able to separate us from God’s love. Nothing in our past, nothing in our present, and nothing in the future. Nothing that happens in the world, or in our life, not one thing in all creation can tear us away from God. Nothing at all.

Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?

But sometimes, if we’re honest, God can feel distant, and we feel disconnected from him.

When that happens, we might find ourselves wondering: “Well if nothing can separate me from you, where are you then God?”

The next place we might go to is “This must be my fault”

When we find ourselves feeling that way, it can make an already difficult situation worse. But fortunately the reality of God’s love is very different.

God told us that we have been wonderfully created by him and that he has chosen us. Each one of us. You are immensely precious to him.

Maybe you have something that is truly precious to you.  If so, you probably take great care of it. You treat it with care, keep it safe, and you always know where it is. You would go to great lengths not to lose it.

Well that’s how God feels about you and me. God gave his son Jesus, the greatest thing he could do, the greatest sacrifice he could make, because we are that precious to him. He did everything so that we would not be lost.

In tough times, when we’re feeling the pressures of life and God seems distant, we can remember this – when we struggle to hold on to God, he will still hold on to us.  We cannot be separated from His love.
